AI accelerates the front end — the drafting, the editing, the publishing. It does not accelerate the maintenance. And when you multiply publishing speed without multiplying maintenance capacity, you are not scaling a content operation. You are accumulating content debt.

Live content carries an explicit maintenance commitment. You know how often it needs review and who is responsible. For most publishers, the Live corpus should be smaller than you think — perhaps 20–30 articles that represent the core of your topical authority.
Stage 2: Stable — monitored, not actively maintained
Stable content is still accurate and useful, but it has aged beyond the point where active maintenance is justified. It covers evergreen topics that change slowly. It does not contain time-sensitive claims, platform-specific instructions, or rapidly decaying data.
Stable content is monitored rather than actively maintained. You check it periodically — once or twice per year — for factual decay, broken links, and cannibalization. You add a publication date and a "last reviewed" date so readers can calibrate their trust.
Stage 3: Sunset — maintained for reference, not discovery

Stage 4: Retired — removed or consolidated

The goal is to make its age transparent so readers can calibrate their trust — and so I can see, at a glance, what needs attention.
This is not a solved problem. It is a managed one. And managing it starts with acknowledging that every publish button creates an obligation that outlives the publish moment.
Rethinking the publishing decision
The most practical change you can make is to treat the decision to publish as a commitment, not a completion.
Before AI-assisted publishing, the friction of writing was a natural governor. Writing an article took long enough that you only wrote what was worth writing. The time investment forced a quality filter.
AI removes that governor. When drafting takes minutes instead of hours, the threshold for what feels worth publishing drops. A half-formed idea becomes a full draft in seconds. The friction between idea and publication collapses.

Does deleting content hurt SEO?
Deleting content without redirects can hurt SEO by creating 404 errors and losing backlink value. If an article has backlinks or meaningful traffic, redirect it to the most relevant newer article on the same topic.
